Can you believe it’s already been 10 years since our last letter? Where does the time go. This look back makes it seem like we travel a lot, and I guess we do. We grew up that way, and inflict it on our kids.
2010 I became co-owner of the Front Street Gallery, a non-profit, unintentionally, but a great source for community. Surprising all, it lasted till 2018. History of the gallery. The best opening parties and family music nights including Dylan, Neil Young, Beatles, and Bowie.
San Jose for a MAPS psychedelic conference with the kids, then up the north coast crossing between the Lost Coast and Redwoods where Joe turned 6.
Molly is a great 4th grade Helena in Midsummer Night's Dream. The Pot Book was published, Julie edited, and Jeremy has an essay in.
In 2011 we went to DR for the third time, to the famous windsurfing spot Cabarete. A beautiful place, but where I almost died sailing over my head on my birthday. My uncle Henry, my “summer father,” eye surgeon and champion sailor who taught me to love wind and water, dies. My homage.
NBC/Universal shoots a TV pilot based on the Julie's book Weekends at Bellevue. They spent 8M on it, but alas it was not picked up. But really fun hanging out on the set, the kids got to yell "Action!"
Family Mojo, our family band, performs at COSM.
In 2012 a cannabis conference took us to Tucson, and from there we took the kids back to our favorites places from 4 previous trips to the desert SW: Buckskin Gulch, Toroweap, kayak camping in Lake Powell.
Another MAPS conference in Oakland. I broke my left ring finger in an elevator door an hour before Julie and I had to perform on guitars. Wherever will I find painkillers?
We make our theatrical debut in ‘Love Letters.’
2013 Another pot conference, another Caribbean island. We spoke to government leaders and movement organizers in Aruba—and 6 years later they legalized medical. And there was Eagle Beach. Beatles family music night at the gallery, 50 years 50 songs. “Must Be Santa” - Merry Christmas 2013 from Family Mojo.
2014 Family vacation Yucatan, our first all-inclusive. We travelled this coast together in 1997, and it has changed. We climbed the pyramid at Coba, again, the last one you can still climb. Joe’s 10th birthday.
Molly performs in Much Ado About Nothing in 8th grade. Julie meets Stevie Nicks in the green room at the Today Show.
Costa Rica, to ride horses with Julie’s publisher in the mountains. Then to the beach where it was way too hot. Our last night there, there were fires burning over the hillsides that fortunately never made it to our hotel.
Julie’s “Moody Bitches” is published. For the Dutch release (it would be translated into 11 languages), we went to Amsterdam. Airbnb and rental bikes.
Molly age 15 spoke on the “Partying and the Search for Identity” panel at the DPA conference in DC.
For the first time we travel at Christmas-New Years. Another Airbnb in Venice, then across to Tuscany for New Year’s in Lucca. And of course Pisa for leaning tower shots.
2016 Julie and Jeremy speak at a medical cannabis conference in Marin. Later back to visit the in-laws in Palm Springs—a place of desert, drought and ever-watered golf grass. (As symbolic of the US as Vegas.) Two weeks without water or Mexican labor this place would die. Fortunately it’s hard by Joshua Tree. Last time tent camping with the kids, so far. It was so loud with wind in the rocks they ended up sleeping in the car.
Bowie tribute show at the gallery. First Shed show, Prince tribute. Molly in ‘Spelling Bee’ musical. Building the community sauna at Jay and KR’s.
2017 Songs of the Rivals (J & J) at the Shed, an over-ambitious 18 of the 21 originals we rehearsed. The Shed, our local semi-private music club, becomes the place of community gigs since the closing of Front Street. Prince, the Stones, the Dead, Townes Van Zandt, Protest Songs, Shedstock, among others.
Another drug conference, Breaking Convention in London, we stay in Greenwich and revisit the place I lived in 64-65. Stopped in Iceland on the way home, 4 days driving to places I wanted to photograph. The money you save taking IcelandAir you lose having lunch in Reykjavik.
My father died at the end of 2016, a few days before the election of DT. My mother had died almost exactly 4 years before. She lived to vote for and see Obama re-elected. This year we end up traveling to their homelands, London and Nashville. Nashville to look for my mother’s home, and to see a total eclipse, which is all about magical alignment. Down to Memphis and up to Kentucky—a ribs tour of the South is how we sold it to Joe. The eclipse was my 4th, Julie’s 3rd, the kids first, and they got it.
2018 Built a cabin in the woods, Molly started CCNY, Joe started high school. Yucatan again. Took the kids to see Jethro Tull in NYC (not so great) and Squeeze (amazing) at the Cape the next summer.
At Molly’s basketball Senior Night she sings the National Anthem with her mother. Molly in "Anything Goes”. Joe on drums in 9th grade, already the best drummer in the high school band.
2019 Joe plays drums in the pit with the pros for the high school musical. The Pawling Bread Co, we invested in, finally miraculously opens in the village, which will never be the same again. Bucketlist conference trip to Esalen in Big Sur, CA, with Michael Pollan, Paul Stamets and others. Home for a few days, then off to 10 days in Morocco with Joe. Took Joe to Julie’s camp Coniston, then toured Maine (most mellow cannabis state) and NH. Saw Molly perform in Dry Land and Urinetown, and knock ‘em dead at the Shed, again.
Birth of Sahar Roni Silverwolff to Zaro and Asher, first child of that generation, our first niece’s first son.
A lot of other stuff happened, I’m sure, but I didn’t take pictures of it all, which is how I remember things. But seriously: travel, music, the kids, nature, and our community.
Have a great decade. Talk to you again in 2030! Insh'allah.
